Lost Money on a Fake Probo App?
How to Report Cyber Fraud in India
If a fake Probo clone app took your deposit and blocked your withdrawal, there is a specific process to follow โ and speed matters. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and the 1930 helpline can freeze recipient accounts if alerted quickly. This guide walks you through every step.
๐จ Do This Right Now
Call 1930 (National Cyber Crime Helpline) or go to cybercrime.gov.in immediately. Recovery odds drop with every hour of delay. The helpline can trigger an account freeze on the recipient UPI account if you report within hours of the fraud. Do not wait to gather more information โ call first, document after.

Step-by-step: What to do right now
Stop depositing immediately
If “support” is asking you to deposit more money to “unlock” or “verify” your withdrawal, this is Stage 2 of the same scam. Do not send any more money under any circumstances.
Screenshot everything before it disappears
The app itself, your transaction history inside the app, the website URL, any chat conversations with “support,” and the UPI IDs you sent money to. Scam sites and apps disappear quickly.
Call 1930 right now
The National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) is available across India. When you call, have your UPI transaction IDs and the recipient VPA (UPI ID) ready. The helpline can initiate a “freeze request” on the destination account through NPCI โ but only while funds are still there.
File a report at cybercrime.gov.in
Go to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and file a financial fraud report. You will need: your name and contact details, the amount lost, the transaction IDs (from your UPI app), the recipient UPI VPA, the website or app name, and any screenshots. Save the acknowledgement number.
Contact your bank or UPI app
Open your UPI app (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, etc.) and report the fraud transaction. Most have a built-in fraud reporting flow. Also call your bank’s customer service and file a written complaint. Mention your cybercrime portal acknowledgement number.
File at your local police station (if significant amount)
A formal FIR at your local cyber crime cell or police station creates an official record. Bring your cybercrime portal acknowledgement number, bank statements, and all screenshots. This is especially important if the amount is above โน10,000.
What information do you need to report?
โ For the 1930 Helpline
- Your registered phone number
- Amount lost and date of transaction
- Recipient UPI VPA (the ID you sent money to)
- UPI transaction reference number
โ For cybercrime.gov.in
- All UPI transaction IDs
- Screenshots of the app and website
- The website URL or app name used
- Any chat with “support” โ screenshots or logs
- Your bank account details for the complaint
Honest answer: what are your chances of recovery?
Recovery is possible if you report quickly. The 1930 helpline and the NPCI can freeze destination accounts that still hold funds โ but once money is moved further down the chain or converted, recovery becomes very unlikely.
If you report within 24 hours: reasonable chance of a freeze if funds are still in the recipient account. After 72 hours: decreasing odds. After weeks: recovery is unlikely, but reporting is still the right thing to do โ it builds the case against the operators and may help others.
๐ Even if recovery fails, your report helps law enforcement track patterns and take down operators. The case against the real Probo started with individual FIRs from users who lost money.
